Evaluation of protective devices for motorcyclists
TRANSPOLIS can carry out the evaluation of motorcyclist protection systems according to any of the following test procedures:
- French National Test Protocol,
- CEN/TS 1317-8 European test procedure,
- UNE 135900 Spanish national standard.
All of these test procedures involve launching an anthropomorphic crash test dummy, representing a motorcyclist, towards the lower part of the barrier equipped with the protection system, the dummy sliding along the ground towards the point of impact. This dummy, dressed in motorcyclist clothing, is fitted with sensors which allow the determination of the impact severity.
The European test method CEN/TS 1317-8 includes two tests at 60 km/h (or 70 km/h) with an approach angle of 30°. The dummy is positioned on its back and impacts the test item head-first:
Test 1: impact opposite a barrier post (or opposite a junction between elements for a modular barrier);
Test 2: impact midway between barrier posts (or at the middle of an element for a modular barrier).
Performance and Acceptance Criteria of your protection system
The following criteria are applied for the acceptance and classification of the system:
- Head Impact Criterion (HIC) – calculated from head decelerations,
- Neck compression criterion,
- Neck traction criterion,
- Neck shearing criterion,
- Head/neck lateral rotation moment,
- Head/neck fore/aft rotation moment,
- No rupture of the system,
- Dummy must not remain trapped in the system,
- Dummy must not pass through the system,
- No detached dummy limbs or skin lacerations.
One or more vehicle tests according to EN 1317 are added to the tests above to check that the overall system (new design or modified existing system) restrains a vehicle under the conditions required for certification. When the motorcyclist protection system is added to an existing road safety barrier, the containment level must be unchanged.
For a new design of safety barrier combining vehicle restraint and motorcyclist protection functions, the system must satisfy all the specifications from the European standards EN 1317-1 and 2
