Passengers Safety - APTS Sensors

TRANSPOLIS produces and markets new measuring tools, APTS sensors, developed by IFSTTAR (French institute of science and technologies for transport, development and networks).

APTS sensors were developed for the Q-Dummies series, representing children from 1 to 10 years of age. Fitted vertically in pairs in the dummy’s abdomen, they are an indispensable tool in the assessment of abdominal lesions caused during crash tests on restraint systems for children:

  • APTS30: sensors measuring 30 mm in diameter for the abdomen of dummy Q1/1.5
  • APTS40: sensors measuring 40 mm in diameter for the abdomens of dummies Q3 and Q6
  • APTS50: sensors measuring 50 mm in diameter for the abdomen of dummy Q10.

In the context of the new regulation ECE R129 (which will replace ECE R44/04), this new instrumentation is indispensable, not least because abdominal pressure sensors are now adopted in the UN Regulation (*) for dummies used to certify restraint systems for children.

The process has taken time to become mandatory and be included in the regulation. This regulation was introduced thanks to the work done by the European Enhanced Vehicle Safety Committee - EEVC (See the working group's report 12: "The use of thoracic deflection criteria balanced with abdomen pressure criteria for the Q-Series in frontal impacts" - www.eevc.org).

International projects are also under way to extend the use of this sensor to adult dummies such as the 50th percentile man and the 5th percentile woman.
